"Wonder" - Book Review
It has been 2 years since I read this book (with absolutely no intention to read it) and I still can't get over how breath-taking it is. I want to tell you about this book too with the hope that you'll enjoy it as well.
Wonder is a book by RJ Palacio. It is about a 10-year-old boy called named August Pullman. He lives in New York. He has a serious cranofacial anomaly which has led to a facial deformity. He had been home-schooled until now and his parents want to send him to a proper middle school because they want him to face the world too. The book is about how he finds his path through middle school, through friends, bullying and academics.
This was the first book I read with multiple characters narrating different sections of the story. It not only brought variety into the book, but also gave me an insight into the character's life and personality. This was one of the most interesting features of the book.
I could also feel the true emotions of each character since there was so much meaning in everything they said. The plot and the words used were very well thought through For example, a line that stood out to me from the book was, "The only reason I'm not normal is because no one else sees me that way." Now this is a short sentence but it conveys a lot. It shows what August truly feels about his condition and what others see him as.
Each character had their own personality which was very believable. His sister, Olivia is a high-schooler. She is shown as a regular teenager with her own needs and wants which her parents don't provide her with sometimes as they are too busy with her brother. The author has very well described how she sometimes feels lost and lonely when she doesn't get the support she should, but still takes care of August because she knows that his needs are more important than hers. This was realistic because it is rare to find an older teenage sister who is completely selfless just for her siblings Then is Summer, who is August's first friend at school. The author has made it very clear that it did take Summer some time to get used to August because after all, she was not a fully grown adult.
This book would make an inspiring read for teenagers and adults alike because they too can learn about the power of empathy and kindness through this book. I wish that you derive your own message from it too.
